A US Spotify patent – “Identifying taste attributes from an audio signal” – originally filed in 2018 has now been granted effective January 12, which will enable the streaming service to monitor speech a user’s daily in order to personalize recommendations to the user.
This patent also extends to background noise in addition to everyday speech and will help the platform determine a user’s “emotional state, gender, age or accent” and aims to quantify this data by attributing entry to a range of emotions: “happy, sad, angry or neutral,” reports Music Business Worldwide.
These moods are determined by a number of factors, and Spotify will monitor “intonation, stress, rhythm, and other units of speech” to make these determinations.
Currently, Spotify already collects some of this personal information through a short questionnaire, but this approach is now considered outdated and “tedious” for the user. Basically all of those options that you need to grab when setting up your profile are out of favor so that Spotify can listen to whatever you say, even if it’s a bird chirping outside or cars passing by.
Further describing the apparent need for this intrusive data collection method, the dossier states, “What is needed is a totally different approach to collecting a user’s taste attributes, especially one that is rooted in technology so that the human activity described above (eg, forcing a user to provide input) is at least partially eliminated and performed more efficiently.
Whatever Spotify recommends for you in the future, at least we still have that AI bot that will grill your musical tastes.
