Valerie Bertinelli is being honest about the death of Eddie Van Halen.
The actress, 60, took to Instagram Live on Friday to chat about her late ex-husband with therapist Angie Johnsey and tore herself as she remembered the rockstar.
“We need the dark to see bright light, to see how light it can be,” Bertinelli said of grief. “Without the darkness, we would never see the light – it’s right there and you go numb. So the darkness makes us appreciate the light more.
“You never like this new normal but it is what it is,” Bertinelli said later, reflecting on the afterlife of Van Halen. “It’s about finding a way to survive this new normal … which a lot of people are doing. This entire year has unfortunately been devoted to death, mourning and loss.”

“Too many people have lost too much. It just turns what’s going on upside down,” the actress added. “Talking about grief is the right thing to do. We all go through some form of it.”
“It’s the thing with the grief, it’s actually a blessing because – and I’m just going to take my relationship with Ed for 40 years – it was a messy relationship,” she says. “We have had very difficult times, very difficult times, but we have also had great times.”

“The lovely thing about the heartbreak and the gift he gives you is that it’s so much easier to remember the beautiful times than the hard and hard times we had with this person,” said she continued. “These are beautiful things to hold on to and remember the best of the person you are suffering from.”
Bertinelli then reflected on the former couple’s son Wolfgang and hopes he remembers the best of her when she is gone.
“I can only hope that when I am gone my son will remember the best of me and not the worst of me. I think this is something to hold on to, that the best of you will be remembered, ”Bertinelli said.
