Let’s just say when Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry flirted friends, they courted each other in more than one way. Perry’s charm, according to the show’s creators, was what convinced Roberts to be the show’s guest – and to agree to a few dates!
Perry – who played Chandler Bing on friends– famous with Roberts between 1995 and 1996. While they’ve kept their offscreen relationship pretty private, fans now have a clue as to how their romance started in the first place. Apparently it all started with an episode called “The One After the Super Bowl,” in which Roberts stars as Chandler’s former flame, Susie Moss. At least that’s according to a handful of friends creators and writers who spoke The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, January 28, where they opened up about Perry and Robert’s onscreen romance in honor of the episode’s 25th anniversary (and just in time for this year’s Super Bowl!)
“Matthew asked her to be on the show, [and] she replied, “Write me an article on quantum physics and I will,” said friends executive producer, Kevin Bright. “I understand Matthew left and wrote an article and faxed him the next day.
Alexa Junge, a writer for the episode, added that there was “a lot of fax flirtation” between the two. “They might have met before the episode, but she cared about him from afar because he’s so charming,” Junge said. “There was a lot of flirtation during the fax. She would give him these questionnaires like, “Why should I go out with you?” And everyone in the writers’ room helped him explain why. Junge went on to reveal, “He could do very well without us, but there was no doubt that we were part of Team Matthew and trying to make this happen for him.
Another co-author, Jeff Astrof, couldn’t believe Perry’s luck. “I remember standing with her on the sidelines. She kept saying, “Chandler is so funny!” And I’m like, ‘I wrote every one of these lines! “I’m not sure if she fell in love with Matthew on the spot, but they quickly started dating,” Astrof told THR, joking that he only had his “horrible girlfriend” to get home. him.
