WNBA’s Layshia Clarendon has breast extraction surgery, hopes to inspire trans athletes

WNBA Star Layshia Clarendon underwent successful surgery to have her breasts removed – and is now going public with the topic in hopes of inspiring other trans athletes.

Clarendon – which identifies itself as non-binary – uses all pronouns (she / they / them / he / him).

In other words … by societal standards, Layshia is comfortable being seen as female … but personally, does not identify only with a specific gender.

Sources close to Layshia tell us that the 29-year-old New York star Liberty underwent breast removal surgery (also known as “upper surgery”) in early January and is recovering well.

“I feel free and euphoric in my body and I want trans people to know and see that we’ve always been around and that no one can erase us,” Layshia said in a statement.

You might be wondering … are there any issues with the WNBA, which has the “W” for “Women” right there on behalf of the league?

The short answer is no.

We are told that Layshia has been in contact with the league and that there is no problem with her status as a player.

As a source close to Layshia explained to us, “Layshia does not identify as a man. They do not go to a destination. Gender is actually a specter.”

One of the main reasons Layshia is going public with her story … we are told that Layshia wants to start a “very real, inclusive and sensitive conversation about how to include trans people in sport, instead of excluding them . “
