There was talk throughout the day that the Cardinals were working on a deal with the Rockies for third baseman Nolan Arenado, and according to Ken Rosenthal they came to an agreement.
The biggest consequence for the Yankees, however, may be that the Rockies are looking to lock down shortstop Trevor Story in the wake of the Arenado deal. The story was seen as a possible shortstop upgrade with Gleyber Torres’ defensive skills in question, but now that avenue can be closed.
NY Post | Dan Martin: In praising Masahiro Tanaka’s Yankees career, Brian Cashman raised a sore point about Tanaka’s accomplishments. Cashman mentioned that he believed Tanaka was doing all he could to bring New York back to the Fall Classic, and that “he probably would have brought us to a World Series if we hadn’t come across the shenanigans. ” Obviously, the Astros scandal is still a deep wound to the franchise, and the opportunity it stole from their players will remain something on their minds for a while.
NY Daily News | William Bradford Davis: Adam Ottavino’s business developed pretty quickly, but he perhaps surprised Ottavino more than anyone. The reliever was working inside Yankee Stadium when he heard about the deal, and Aaron Boone was on site when the news broke. In some ways, this is an awkward end to a rare exchange between rivals, as Ottavino will now wear the Red Sox colors and face his former team several times this year.
