Patrick Reed has been accused by many golf fans on social media of “cheating” during the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines following a controversial decision in the rough on the 10th par 4 hole.
Reed sent his tee shot into the fairway bunker, then hit his second shot into the deep, rough left of the green, where the controversy began.

Patrick Reed with a VERY shady decision here. Pretend the ball is stuck in the rough after not having rebounded beforehand (he did) and picking up the ball before speaking to a rules official. Here is the conversation with the official pic.twitter.com/pJn4Kb7I3Y

The American approached his ball and proceeded to move it after considering that the ball had “become encrusted in the grass” – and as a result, he was entitled to a free drop for an encrusted ball.
However, during a video replay of the shot, it was evident that Reed’s ball had rebounded before plunging into the rough. WATCH the videos above to form your own opinion; you can also hear the conversation between Reed and the Rules Officer.
“I checked him out and I believe he broke new ground,” Reed said as PGA Tour Rules official Brad Fabel came over to speak to the American.
“Since I picked it up to check it looked like it had burst. They said it wasn’t bouncing.”
Fabel came to take a look at where the ball entered the grass and felt it had sunk. He said he could feel a “lip” where the ball entered the ground. Reed replied, “I thought so, but I just wanted to check.”
The former Masters champion was then told he could take a field length from where the ball entered the turf, and was able to clean his ball and drop. free.

Reed was then able to throw his ball onto the green about 25 feet away, then chained the putt for par.
Rules official Ken Tackett later explained on the CBS show that because the official PGA Tour rules label had determined that Reed’s 10-point ball was stuck in the ground, it doesn’t matter. that the ball is embedded in the second bounce.
If a ball sinks into the ground, a player is awarded a free drop under Rule 16 of the Rules of Golf.
Although he was not given a penalty, many golf fans on social media seemed to think Reed more than managed to get away with the decision. Here is a look at several tweets in the wake of the controversial incident.
Sorry to say but he’s cheating again. He picked up his ball before the rule official arrived, and cameras captured the bouncing ball before resting, so it couldn’t be a clogged ball #cheatinggolfer

If Patrick Reed can get away with the PGA Tour, think about what’s going on at your club’s monthly medal

1. He shouldn’t have picked it up before a paymaster was there.
2 he “might” not have seen it bounce from where it was but
100% don’t wait! Let’s be honest, golf is not a fast game, what is an extra 2 minutes? Or wasn’t it trendy and just a garbage lie ??– Daniel Digby (@Dan_Digby) January 30, 2021
Reed is cheating again. No question that Patrick Reed’s ball is integrated into the SECOND BOUNCE! #pgatour how can they allow that to happen.
