Duncan Robinson admits he thought he would get cut after meeting Miami Heat coaches overnight

Duncan Robinson has become a crucial piece for the Miami Heat. However, this has not always been the case.

In a recent episode of Robinson’s podcast, the young sniper looked back on how an innocent night out with friends had caused him to fear his time with the team was coming to an end.

In his first season with the team, Robinson took a night off in New York City to dine with old friends. When he arrived at the bar, he was shocked to meet all of Heat’s coaching staff.

As Robinson puts it, he worried that the optics of spending a night on the town would end his tenure with the team.

“I am absolutely mortified,” he says. “I’m so embarrassed that in my first year the fundamental part of what it looks like is I’m having a night out on the town I’m sure. I am literally the most innocent thing in the world. I’m going to see my friends, we’re basically going to drink some water and catch up.

Robinson went on to say his coaches clearly weren’t worried about his decision to catch up with his friends on the night off. However, that didn’t stop Robinson from going into panic mode.

“I’m going to sit and have dinner with you, and I’m in a mess,” he continued. “I’m like, ‘Dude, it’s over. I’m going to get cut. They don’t think I take my job seriously. That’s it. Had finished. We had a good race. ‘”

Obviously, Robinson was a little more worried than he should have been. After all, there were plenty of previous reports that the Heat knew they had found a diamond in the rough with the guard undrafted.

How right they were.

Robinson is averaging 13.4 points per game and shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 40.4 from beyond the arc.

Obviously, he has no reason to be concerned about that status with the team these days. In fact, it looks like he’s going to win a pretty rich deal this offseason.

If that happens, there’s no doubt his friends will expect him to foot the bill the next time they all get together for a night out on the town.
