SAN FRANCISCO – Golden State Warriors swingman Klay Thompson says it ‘kills’ him to miss his second straight season, this time with a tear in Achilles, but the former All-Star says his cure detox is going well and he still plans to play for “a long time.”
Speaking for the first time since suffering a tear in his right Achilles that ended on November 18, during a training session on November 18, Thompson was in high spirits as he chatted of the long process he was facing.
“I’m living well,” Thompson told NBC Bay Area during Saturday night’s game between the Warriors and the Detroit Pistons. “To be back in the building that I look forward to playing in so much.” Just a little bored sometimes. Things are slow trying to let my Achilles heal and take the next step, which is mobility work, but I’m feeling great, I’m happy to be with my teammates, obviously.
“Unfortunately, I don’t gamble. It kills me every day, but I plan to gamble for a long time, and I don’t want to have any mishaps with this rehab.”
Thompson missed the entire 2019-20 season after tearing the ACL in his left knee in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors. The Warriors were hoping Thompson could help push the organization back into the Championship, but those dreams evaporated just hours before the 2020 draft when Thompson injured his Achilles during a practice session in Los Angeles.
As saddened as the Warriors were about Thompson’s latest injury, they are happy that he’s been more present on the squad since he underwent surgery to fix his Achilles in late November. Thompson has appeared in several Warriors home games at the Chase Center to cheer on his teammates from the bench.
Thompson admitted during Saturday’s game that he didn’t want to do the interview, but the banner hanging behind him had helped him change his mind.
“I didn’t want to do it, but then I saw that backdrop and someone went to great lengths to achieve it,” Thompson explained as the backdrop with the #reporterKlay hashtag was on display behind him. . “So I felt bad for not fulfilling my end of the bargain.”
As he did last season in a cameo appearance as a secondary reporter, Thompson had a bit of fun with broadcasters Bob Fitzgerald and Kelenna Azubuike during the broadcast. One of the conversations that took place centered around Thompson’s 3-point record, having hit 14 3-pointers in an October 2018 game against the Chicago Bulls.
“It’s probably going to be broken here in the next few years,” said Thompson. “Steph Curry – it’s up to Steph. Zach LaVine was close. But I might still break him, I don’t know. I don’t think it’s going to last that long.”
Warriors coach Steve Kerr admitted ahead of Saturday’s game that he had no idea Thompson was going to be on the telecast, but said he would take note of the appearance when he watched it later. .
“He’s always very entertaining with his dry mind,” Kerr said of Thompson. “So when I watch the match tape, I’ll definitely have the volume.”
