Tesla could offer a new S / X model with a traditional steering wheel too

Did you laugh out loud or at least raise an eyebrow when you heard that the revised Tesla Model S and Model X were not going to be sold with a steering wheel, but some sort of yoke instead? If you didn’t really find it funny and thought it could be a safety hazard, then you’re on the same page with NHTSA, who are not yet sure the yoke meets the requirements. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

And there’s a chance it might end up not being legal outside of the US as well, so you would think Tesla had a back-up plan in case that happened. Well, if you browse the official online configurator, you won’t find a traditional steering wheel among the options – then it would appear that Tesla is doing everything possible on the yoke, but like The reader discovered, this is not entirely correct.

After playing around with the URL of one of the images generated by the configurator, they discovered that Tesla did indeed have at least one photo showing the new interior with a classic round bar. This is not accessible to users who are simply setting up a car through the app, but you can find the image by slightly modifying the link itself.

Well, as the source article points out, Tesla has since extracted the image and you can’t access it through the link anymore, but they saved the photo they found and here it is. We’re sure a lot of people will enjoy this photo a lot more who just didn’t understand why Tesla put everything on the yoke and thought it was the only option was a little odd.

Tesla clearly didn’t want you to see this photo – which is why it’s no longer available – but it would have been absolutely silly if the automaker hadn’t considered outfitting the car with a traditional wheel. Of course, the yoke may be approved for use on public roads in some countries, but in others it may not be, and Tesla would still like to sell as many cars as possible, so it makes a lot of sense to ‘have both and customize vehicles for each individual market.
