Winter Weather NC: Parts of central North Carolina will see freezing rain Sunday morning from Triangle to areas north of I-85; icy roads expected

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – Expect to see a cold, rainy day on Sunday across much of central North Carolina.

A winter weather advisory for the Triangle to the north and west went into effect on Saturday evening and will continue until noon on Sunday.

From Saturday evening to Sunday snow showers started for areas north of the Triangle, but nothing like it the snow that fell a few days ago.

A slight winter mixing is possible early in the morning of the Triangle north from about 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., bringing sleet, snow or freezing rain. It should turn to rain after that. There could be up to 0.25 ”of ice buildup north and west of I-85 and travel should be avoided in these areas if possible tomorrow morning. Areas south of the triangle will receive mainly freezing rain.

Although the effect on the triangle should be minimal, freezing rain could cause slippery spots on the roads as temperatures hover around the frost mark.

North of I-85, the mixture will last a bit longer, until maybe noon or 1 p.m. Light icing on elevated surfaces is possible and you may even see a light coating of snow in some spots.
