As soon as news broke that Stafford had asked for his way out of Detroit, most thought Detroit could perhaps pick up a first-round pick and maybe some more.

The inclusion of Jared Goff and his contract will be the debated point of his contract, because without him it’s an easy win for the Lions. A 33-year-old Stafford for two first-round picks is a steal.

But it seems unlikely that the Lions had this deal on the table elsewhere, although there are reports that Detroit refused other fairly important options. Instead, they ate a serious salary cap for the next two seasons for a young quarterback whose career collapsed in the past two years for the further rise in draft capital.

My answer: I think this profession is a solid B +.

While it’s not ideal to take Goff’s bloated contract, there has to be a push and pull when carrying two first-round picks for an aging quarterback. Goff’s contract only hurts the Lions for the next two seasons, and they’re unlikely to compete much in those years, anyway.

In the meantime, the Lions receive a little immediate compensation in this year’s draft with a third-round pick, and they get a good quarterback to fill the gap between now and whoever the team will pick as the next passer in the round. franchise. Maybe there’s even a bit of a belief that Goff could be this guy, but I’m not personally buying him right now.

By 2023, the Lions will likely be free from Goff with no salary cap implications other than lack of carry-over money, and they’ll be richer in two top picks. I will absolutely take this for a team that needed a complete rebuild.
