Trump’s impeachment defense is out. Bannon would encourage him to go to the Senate himself.
Five lawyers who were ready to defend former President Donald Trump in his upcoming Senate impeachment trial have left his legal team, people familiar with the situation have confirmed to CNN and the New York Times. Butch Bowers and Deborah Barbier, who were to be two of the main lawyers, are absent, as are Josh Howard, Johnny Gasser and Greg Harris. No other lawyer has announced that he is involved in the case, so it appears that, for now, Trump is defenseless. The lawyers are said to have left due to a disagreement over legal strategy. Trump would have wanted them to assert his unfounded allegations of widespread electoral fraud in last year’s presidential election rather than focusing on whether condemning a former president after he resigns is constitutional, an argument that seems to be the consensus among Republicans and the reason why I will likely be acquitted. Bowers, a source said, lacked chemistry with Trump and the decision to leave was said to have been mutual. It’s unclear where Trump will go from here – his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani would like to take the case, but he is a potential witness in the trial because he spoke at the rally leading up to the deadly riot of the Capitol Hill says Trump is being accused of incitement, and the Times notes “nearly all” of Trump’s advisers blame Giuliani for the impeachment in the first place. Considering that GOP senators have signaled they will not vote for a conviction, some wonder why Trump would even bother spending money on lawyers at this point.
