LONDON – Just in case you were wondering, Meghan still really hates the Buckingham Palace establishment and resents them for depriving her of her voice, agency and autonomy when she and Harry always did part of the official royal family.
How else to interpret an extraordinary statement from Meghan this weekend in which she accused the dark forces of the palace of “dictating” that she change her name on the birth certificate of her son Archie?
On the original certificate, registered on May 17, 2019, the Duchess named her “Rachel Meghan Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex”.
But 19 days later, on June 5, the royal couple submitted changes to both of their names.
The Duchess’s name has been ‘corrected’ to read simply ‘Her Royal Highness Duchess of Sussex’, which sparked speculation as to why this had happened.
A spokeswoman for the Duchess said: “The name change on public documents in 2019 was dictated by the palace, as documents from senior palace officials confirmed. This was not requested by Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex or the Duke of Sussex.
“To see this British tabloid and their carnival of so-called ‘experts’ chose to deceptively turn this into a calculated family ‘snob’ and suggest that she oddly wants to be anonymous on her child’s birth certificate or any other legal document, would be laughable if it were not offensive.
“There’s a lot going on in the world – let’s focus on that rather than creating click bait.
The verb “to dictate”, in case you were wondering, is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “to issue as an order “or” to impose, pronounce or specify with authority “and Meghan’s use of the word in her anger statement certainly captures the meaning that Meghan’s own wishes were considered totally irrelevant by the pushers of palace pens that enforced the change.
It is interesting to note that the Sun Sunday, who broke the story over the weekend, says they have contacted Meghan’s press team about the story but have not received a response.
It’s fair to say by Meghan’s team that the newspaper’s speculation that the name change might have been a pop to Kate Middleton was gratuitous – and stupid. Indeed, this point was noted by Tim Teeman on Sunday in the Daily Beast’s weekly royal newsletter, in which he wrote: Sun poses this as a snub against William and Kate, as Kate has her name on her children’s birth certificates. The possibility that the decision was taken for personal reasons, totally unrelated to a snub is not mentioned.
However, the Sussexes’ policy of “zero engagement” with British tabloids such as the Sun It seems the Sussex side of history is not brought to the fore when these newspapers write about them.
Meghan has often complained of feeling silenced by the palace. In an interview with The 19th website, for example, she said, “I know what it’s like to have a voice, and also what it’s like to feel speechless.”
In one of her very rare joint appearances with William and Kate, she was the last to speak and, when the microphone was not handed to her, she said coldly, “I have no voice?
But it seems, at least from the Sun on Sunday account of the events of being asked to comment on the very strange name change on Archie’s two certificates, which is after all a matter of public domain, and chose not to.
It hardly counts as being silenced, and that means it’s not a story of outrageous press abuse that Meghan’s statement seems to suggest. Rather, it seems like a cautionary tale of the inability to respond in a timely manner to genuine press demands. And given that Meghan and Harry have a $ 100million deal with Netflix and a lucrative podcast deal with Spotify, complaining about the palace’s denial of agency several years ago seems a bit like fighting the war of yesterday.
As they note, there is “a lot going on in the world” right now.
Sources at Buckingham Palace on Sunday suggested that a “clerical error and nothing more” was to blame for the change in Archie’s certificate.
It has to be wondered if Meghan, using this story to spot the itch of her troubled relationship with the palace and the press, is really making things better.
Because, while it is not known why the birth certificate was changed, Meghan’s statement makes it clear that her sorry resentment of the palace is still not in question at all.
