4 potential Steelers cap losses this offseason

It’s not enough for the Pittsburgh Steelers to pass most of their inside free agents this offseason. Pittsburgh may have to dig into the guys under contract and make some tough decisions about veterans whose play doesn’t match their cap hit. Here are four guys to consider as the Steelers head into the offseason.

Pouncey has hinted at retirement before, but regardless, the team could save $ 8 million in 2021 if Pouncey is released. His game has dwindled and although he’s Ben Roethlisberger’s safety cover, he’s still a business.

You probably thought I was going to put Joe Haden here and that’s a real possibility. But if the Steelers only look at it from a financial standpoint, Nelson’s release earns $ 8.25 million.

Guard David DeCastro

Another veteran who saw his game plunge in 2020 was DeCastro. With the potential to save $ 8.75 million and free up a starting spot for Kevin Dotson, it could make sense for the Steelers.

Keeping the bigger and more obvious for the end, we have Roethlisberger. Big Ben has said he will do whatever it takes in terms of salary to play for Pittsburgh this season, but if the two sides fail to come to an agreement, the savings to free Roethlisberger are $ 19 million.
