“Saturday Night Live” returned from its winter hiatus with a slightly different take on political coverage that many viewers immediately noticed.
After spending four years relentlessly mocking Donald Trump every week, NBC’s popular sketch show didn’t open with an impersonation of President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. That’s not to say the episode eschewed politics. Its cold opening hooked up Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, Mark Zuckerberg and Tom Brady while the show’s “Weekend Update” segment commented on the riot on Capitol Hill.
The show had a long way to go after being cut short during a turbulent period in US politics. The month of January alone included the riots, a historic second indictment of Trump and the GameStop wave that threw Wall Street into a loop. Yet despite Biden’s inauguration and first week in office also during the show’s hiatus, many critics of the show noted that “SNL” didn’t seem interested in roasting the incumbent president in the same way. than when Trump was in the oval.

“What … NOT bashing the president on SNL ?? This is unheard of … we tolerated the weekly bashing, impersonation, disgust with Alec Baldwin and a slew of other baddies, bashing President Trump..Now Biden and Harris are NEVER parodied! No skits, no impersonation..NADA! ” another wrote.
“SNL can’t say anything bad about Biden. He’s a Democrat,” a third user noted.

“Why is SNL avoiding the best source of comedy by giving Joe Biden a free pass?” another user added. “Poor old Joe is an endless supply of comedy.”
“I would like to see Jim Carey play Biden again, he’s funny. Are we going to see President Biden mocked anytime soon, like when SNL mocked Trump and other presidents while they were in power? executive orders would be a fun piece! ” another person wrote.
Although Biden has only been president for a week, and the series only featured one episode in 2021, many seem convinced that “Saturday Night Live” will never make fun of Biden or Harris. However, the show did not hesitate to regularly parody the two politicians during the campaign.

Former cast member Maya Rudolph was on hand to portray Harris in debates sketches as the show tapped Jim Carrey to represent the then presidential candidate. In one of his last shows before going on hiatus, Carrey revealed he would no longer be playing Biden on “SNL,” handing over the job to actor Alex Moffat.

“Although my term was only supposed to last 6 weeks, I was delighted to be elected SNL president … comedy’s biggest call of duty,” Carrey tweeted before Moffat’s debut. “I would love to go forward knowing Biden was the winner because I pulled it off – but I’m just one in a long line of pride and fight against SNL Bidens!”
