As we wait for the official end of the 2020 NFL season when Super Bowl LV kicks off Sunday afternoon, the offseason rumor is starting to spin and today a leading NFL analyst made a statement. rather bold statement regarding the Minnesota Vikings.
Looks like it’ll be Cousins in San Francisco, but either way, I still think Jimmy G starts the Pats’ first game. ♂️
– Ross Tucker (@RossTuckerNFL) February 1, 2021
Ross Tucker, who currently works as an NFL analyst for Westwood One (among other jobs), said a few hours ago that Kirk Cousins is going to be the San Francisco 49ers quarterback in 2021. Saying that this would be a shocking development is an understatement, especially given the rest of what Tucker has said.
Tucker says Jimmy Garoppolo, who is currently the 49ers’ starting quarterback, will be the New England starting quarterback next year. One should think that if the Vikings were to swap cousins in San Francisco that Garoppolo would be part of returning to Minnesota. Otherwise, if you’re the Vikings, you didn’t just commit to drafting a first-round quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, you made a commitment to start that quarterback immediately. . Unless you think Sean Mannion or any random veteran the Vikings could potentially take away from free will would be the answer.
(This is not the answer.)
To be perfectly clear, I don’t think Vikings are moving with Kirk Cousins. But if they are so inclined, they have to get there soon enough. As we already mentioned in this space, if Cousins is on the Vikings roster on the third day of the 2021 league year in March, then his salary for 2022 becomes guaranteed. Basically, if the Vikings want to get out of Cousins contract, they can’t hang around and wait and see what happens.
Is an exchange of cousins possible? Yeah, I guess. At this point, almost anything is possible. Do I think it’s likely? No.
As Ted said in the last episode of Vikings Report with Drew and Ted, at this point Cousins is Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman’s guy. These two guys are related to Kirk Cousins, and they’ll go wherever Cousins’ right-hand man takes them. . . whether it’s for the Super Bowl, the unemployment line, or somewhere in between. The Vikings appear to be poised to ‘turn the clock back’ in 2021 in the hopes that the guys they lost to injury in 2020 (Danielle Hunter, Michael Pierce, Anthony Barr, et al) can beef up the defense enough to let this team. win as Mike Zimmer wishes. They don’t do that with a rookie quarterback or a veteran who, frankly, isn’t as good as Kirk Cousins.
Lord knows we need something to talk about this offseason, with the draft over two months away and free agency looking more and more like something the Vikings won’t be big players in. I guess it’s as good as anything.
