Colts ‘were very competitive’ in Matthew Stafford draw

The Indianapolis Colts were interested in trading quarterback Matthew Stafford before the Los Angeles Rams turned away everyone’s offer in order to get the 32-year-old.

While it is unclear exactly what the Colts offered in return for Stafford – reports are mixed – Pat McAfee said on Pat McAfee’s show that the general manager Chris Ballard told him that Indy was “very competitive” in the Stafford toss.

“’Where are we going?’ I asked. And he said “we were very competitive” – his exact words. “We were very competitive with Stafford and the Rams threw a bomb,” McAfee said on his show of the conversation he had with Ballard. “It’s good for them,” he said roughly. We couldn’t do that.

It would make sense given what the Rams offered, which turned out to be two future first-round picks, a third-round pick and quarterback Jared Goff. We thought the overall pick # 21 and overall pick # 54 would have been a decent offer. But the Colts would never have matched what the Rams gave.

Once again, what the Colts have offered is unclear. Albert Breer of Sports Illustarted reported that the Colts offered a combo of players and choices, but never the No. 21 overall selection while Peter King of NBC Sports reported that the Colts offered their first round but nothing more.

So maybe the Colts were competitive in the Stafford draw and one of the favorites until the Rams came in and outbid everyone.

Either way, the Colts will move on to their next goal, which is to either sign a veteran in free agency or trade for a quarterback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft.
