The cautious approach comes as Biden’s team tries to speed up vaccine distribution while grappling with how many doses go unused in states, trying to help manufacturers increase supply and explore options like than mass vaccination sites run by the federal government.
The White House is expected to notify governors of the deployment late Tuesday morning before publicly announcing the plan shortly after noon. White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients expected to hold press briefing at 12:15 p.m.
The federal government has so far shipped nearly 50 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to states, according to CDC data. More than 26 million people received a first dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, and nearly 6 million received their second dose on Monday.
The Trump administration announced last November that the federal government would partner with several independent and chain pharmacies, including Albertsons, Rite Aid, Kroger, Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, and Publix to administer Covid-19 vaccines. It is not known if the doses will be sent to all pharmacies that have agreed to be part of the partnership.
