Porter describes taking refuge with Ocasio-Cortez during the Capitol riot: ‘She said’ I just hope I get to be a mom ‘

Porter said she saw Ocasio-Cortez as buildings on Capitol Hill were evacuated, which led to pro-Trump protesters raping the Capitol itself. California lawmaker said Ocasio-Cortez asked if she and a staff member could enter Porter’s office.

“Alex is generally polite and very personable as always, and she doesn’t even really speak to me. She was opening doors and I was like, “Can I help you? How are you looking for? And she said, “I’m looking for where I’m going to hide,” Porter told MSNBC on Monday.

Porter said she tried to comfort Ocasio-Cortez, saying, “Well don’t worry I’m a mom … [and] I have everything we need to live for about a month in this office.

“She said, ‘I just hope I become a mom. I hope I don’t die today, ”Porter told MSNBC.

The California lawmaker also noted that she and Ocasio-Cortez discussed their shoe choices as they took refuge in the office in case they needed to flee violent rioters. Porter wore flats on the day of the riot, while Ocasio-Cortez wore heels.

“I remember her telling me, ‘I knew I shouldn’t wear heels, how am I going to run? And we went over there and found her a pair of sneakers for one of my employees to wear so that she could run if she needed to run literally for her life, ”Porter said on Monday.

Ocasio-Cortez shared Porter’s comments on Twitter Monday, thanking her “for holding him back that day” and calling her “a wonderful friend.”

Porter said she waited in her office for six hours during the riot and that no law enforcement or other official came to verify that she and her employees were safe.

“The Capitol Police never took the safety of every member into account, so we heard voices in the hallway. We didn’t know what they were, if they were cops [or] if they were intruders, and so we just stayed in the dark, “Porter said, adding that she and others in her office were sitting quietly” in the hope that they [would] just passed.

Porter added that Capitol Police did not initially instruct lawmakers to “take cover” during their initial evacuation of office buildings on Capitol Hill.

Ocasio-Cortez shared his experience with the Capitol Riot live on Instagram on Monday night. She said she was in her office earlier today, before taking shelter in Porter’s office, when she heard knocks on doors. She told viewers that she hid in the bathroom and heard a man, later identified as a Capitol policeman, yelling, “Where is she?”

“I thought I was going to die,” she says. “You have a lot of thoughts, I think, when you’re in a situation like this. And like one of those thoughts I have is … I really felt like if that was the plan for me, then people could take it from here.
