Jared Goff had a whole range of adventures during his time in Los Angeles. From being the No. 1 overall pick to struggle out of the gate under Jeff Fisher to being a Pro Bowler in Year Two with Sean McVay to lead the Rams to a Super Bowl and then back into the abyss as scapegoat for how he crashed back to earth the past two seasons.
In a lengthy conversation with the Los Angeles Times’s Sam Farmer, Goff opened up about how it ended with his trade to Detroit in exchange for quarterback Matthew Stafford.
“As a quarterback, as a guy who’s arguably the most important position on the pitch, if you’re in a place where you’re not wanted and they want to leave you, the feeling is mutual. “Goff told Farmer. “You don’t want to be in the wrong place. It became increasingly clear that this was the case. [The trade] is something that I hope will be so good for my career. “
Goff spent his first five seasons in Los Angeles after the Rams traded a cargo of draft picks to move to select the Cal product. They traded a lot to get rid of Goff as well, dispatching him two first-round picks and a third round to the Lions.
“I really enjoyed my stay here,” said Goff. “I want to leave that on a positive note. Obviously the ending was not favorable and was not fun. But they drafted me No. 1 overall and brought me to a city that did not ‘hasn’t had a football team in a long time. time, to be part of that post-2016 rebuild, to be able to help bring Los Angeles football back to the forefront, all of which I am extremely proud of. Goff’s time in Los Angeles was highlighted by soaring highs – beating the Kansas City Chiefs in a high-flying airstrike in a 2018 case; winning two playoff games to make the Super Bowl – and a few lows that peaked with the out-of-town trade.
“Regardless of how it ended, Sean and I had a great relationship and did so many great things together,” Goff said. “Won a bunch of big games. Won a bunch of playoff games. Won two divisions together. Having so much success on the offensive, so many good times and good memories.
“Sadly, it ended bitterly, but that still doesn’t take all of those moments away from us.”
That sour ending included a thumb injury suffered late in the season that required surgery to bring him back for the playoffs. Goff struggled with accuracy before and after the injury, especially under pressure, but the quarterback wasn’t the main reason the Rams pulled out of the playoffs with a loss to Green Bay.
LA, however, saw a chance to improve the position and offload Goff’s contract. After weeks of hinting at their dissatisfaction with Goff’s trajectory, the Rams’ leaders have made a bold move. History will judge if it was the right one.
Echoing his comments to NFL.com’s Mike Silver the day after the exchange was announced, the QB is thrilled for the next page of his journey to a new city.
“(Talking to Lions) is what made me say, ‘Oh my God, this is what it’s supposed to feel,’ Goff said. “‘It makes me feel good,’ how excited they were, how excited they were.”
