After the tumultuous year that just ended, you might find it hard to be surprised by anything at this point, but this morning’s Golden Globes set out to prove that notion incorrect.
Providing a pre-dawn distraction for insomniacs around the world, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association today unveiled the nominations for the seemingly semi-virtual bicoastal ceremony on February 28 on NBC. Having skipped hosting duties during Donald Trump’s entire reign of terror and mistake, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are back this year for the fourth time, their first since 2015.
Plus, the nominations were inevitably going to be more intriguing than usual after the coronavirus pandemic ravaged production schedules. Heavyweights like the big winners of last year Succession and The wonderful Mrs. Maisel were subsequently out of the mix.

In this context, and with a small audio glitch, former Globe winners Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson announced the contenders from their respective homes. This turned out to be a very good morning for the likes of One night in Miami director Regina King, Sacha Baron Cohen and Next Borat movie, The crown, The Mandalorian and Sound of metal‘s Rice Ahmed.
In addition, Norman Lear and Jane Fonda have already chosen HFPA Spring in their approach, even before today. The Living Legends will be the recipients of the Carol Burnett Award and Cecil B de Mille Award for Hollywood Impact respectively at the 78th Golden Globes later this month. However, for some living legends like Sophia Loren, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, some upcoming living legends and some overlooked, this morning has been a bummer.
Here are the big snobs and surprises for this year’s Globes nominations by the under 90 members of the HFPA:
Tom Hanks – The multiple Oscar winner and last year’s Cecil B de Mill winner braved the Battle of the Atlantic in Doggy style and post-civil war America World news, but his double shot fired blank with the HFPA today
I can destroy you – The heartbreaking and at times hilarious Michaela Cole sexual assault drama and the aftermath of the BBC and HBO was one of the most beloved shows of the past year and topped my 10 best new shows of 2020. Crickets this morning when it comes to Globe nominations, overwhelming crickets
Spike Lee – Da 5 bloods had outstanding performances from Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, and Chadwick Boseman, among others, but that just wasn’t enough for the passionate Vietnam War film or its pioneering director to receive the slightest love. Shocker.
Zendaya – The Euphoria star’s outstanding performance with John David Washington in lockdown film Malcolm & Mare was totally locked
Meryl Streep – Tell me, after 32 Globes nominations, how do you organize an awards ceremony and not name Meryl?
Bridgerton – The complete absence of the Regency-era blockbuster produced by Shonda Rhymes in today’s nominations proves that the Golden Globes aren’t just a popularity contest. Otherwise, Netflix Bridgerton would have cleaned up all categories this morning and probably February 28
Sophia Loren – The screen icon returned with the famous Life to come. The Netflix movie landed the names for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Song, which is why its megastar itself proved to be a stalemate with Globes voters.
I have never – Majority drama co-created by Mindy Kaling was a worldwide hit on Netflix, but nada in terms of nominations
Al Pacino – In a long career full of highs, Pacino’s nomination today for the unintentional comic Hunters seems like a bad joke and a big surprise – or not when you look at the history of the Globes.
Steven Yeun – Grand Jury winner Sundance 2020 Threatening got a big thumbs up from AFI and the National Board of Review and a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film this morning – yet the film’s lead man was left empty-handed today.
The midnight sky – Besides better original music, a headline movie, it looks like it was pretty dark for the post-apocalyptic drama directed by George Clooney and starring Netflix.
Chris Rock – The comedian was at his dramatic best as the ambitious Kansas City crime boss in season four of Fargo. In Rock’s case, crime doesn’t pay with Globes voters
Principle – The Christopher Nolan-directed thriller was the only big game in town and in theaters during the early part of the pandemic. When it comes to the broad categories, today, like the main plot of the film, it felt like that past never happened.
Lakeith Stanfield – Daniel Kaluuya rightly received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as Black Panther frontman Fred Hampton. So where was the nod for her Judas and the Black Messiah co-star? You know his Black History Month, don’t you?
Ben Affleck – There was a big push for The way back actor. A push that hit a roadblock without recognition this morning
