Streaming services topped the nominations for the 78th Golden Globe Awards, signaling a shift in power in Hollywood away from traditional movie studios and cable TV and TV players in favor of digital upstarts. It’s a movement that gathered momentum during the coronavirus pandemic, as much of the world remained stranded at home and theaters remained closed.
One of the main beneficiaries of this change, Netflix, dominated the competition, with a staggering 42 nominations in film and television categories, including nods for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “The Queen’s. Gambit ”and“ The Crown. ” But he was not the only representative of a new order. Amazon Studios landed 10 nominations, including nods for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and its anthology series “Small Ax,” while Hulu also received 10 nods, including nominations for “Palm Springs” and “Ramy”.

“Mank,” a black and white ode to old Hollywood that was released by Netflix, landed six top nominations. This includes nods for Best Drama, as well as for its director David Fincher and for Gary Oldman’s performance as “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. “The Crown,” another Netflix production, led the television category with six nominations. The lavish historical drama, which chronicles the private lives of Queen Elizabeth II and her family, has won nominations for Best TV Drama, as well as for performances from several of its cast members. Olivia Colman, who plays the monarch, and Emma Corrin, the actress in charge of channeling Princess Diana, won the nominations.
“The Trial of Chicago 7,” a Netflix political drama that was acquired from Paramount Pictures when COVID-19 disrupted a planned theatrical deployment, was the second highest-nominated film with five nods. “Schitt’s Creek”, fresh out of its Emmy Championship, has won five nominations, one less than the high water mark set by “The Crown”.
“Mank” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” will compete in the drama category against “Promising Young Woman”, “The Father” and “Nomadland”. The Globes recognize comedies and musicals in a different category, allowing them to better distribute wealth more widely. Nominations for Best Musical or Comedy include “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Music,” “The Prom,” “Palm Springs,” and “Hamilton,” a filmed version of the Broadway smash that became a streaming sensation when it hit Disney Plus last summer.
In the race for Best TV Series, “The Crown” will face off against “The Mandalorian”, “Ozark”, “Ratched” and “Lovecraft Country”. “Schitt’s Creek” will compete for the honors of Best Television Comedy with “The Great”, “Emily in Paris”, “The Flight Attendant” and “Ted Lasso”.
On the film front, Globes voters named a record three female directors, Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), Regina King (“A Night in Miami”) and Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”). They become the sixth, seventh and eighth female Golden Globe nominees for directing – joining Barbra Streisand, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay and Kathryn Bigelow. Zhao is also the first Asian woman nominated for the Achievement Award.
The Globes are like the boisterous, noisier, and often more entertaining cousin of the Oscars – the champagne flows freely, the awards are largely focused on acting and directing and less on below-the-line categories like editing. sound or cinematography, which means the Beverly Hilton’s ballroom is an A-List affair, and viewers are hoping to see their favorite stars loosen their inhibitions a bit. This year’s broadcast will be very different even though it brings back veteran hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The Globes will be taking place practically this year, so as not to become a coronavirus super-spreader event.
The awards show has a habit of recognizing emerging talent and new and lively shows, and the 2021 edition did not disappoint in this regard. HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant” got two nods after wrapping up its inaugural season this winter, acting newcomer Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”) won a lead nomination, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who caused a sensation in “The Queen’s Gambit” “, was nominated for her chess prodigy trick in that series and for her romantic melee work in” Emma “.
Taylor-Joy was not the only contender for several titles. Sacha Baron Cohen was honored for his work in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and for her chameleon turn as Abbie Hoffman in “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, while Colman received a nod for “The Father” with his nomination for “The Couronne.”
There have been a few notable snubs. Spike Lee’s critically acclaimed Vietnamese epic “Da 5 Bloods” failed to score a better wink and its star Delroy Lindo was left out; water fountain favorites “Dead to Me” and “Bridgerton” missed out on nominations; and awards sweetheart Meryl Streep did not land a nomination for her comedy tour on “The Prom.” Their exclusion paved the way for upheaval. Tahar Rahim (“The Mauritanian”), Kate Hudson (“Music”) and Jared Leto (“The Little Things”) landed nominations despite not making the shortlist of many tipsters, while “Ratched” Netflix has squeaked in the TV series race after enduring poor reviews.
While the Oscars are voted on by filmmakers, artisans, artists and other Hollywood players, the Globes are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a tight-knit group of journalists with around 100 members. Therefore, the Globes are not always a good indicator of how the Oscars are going. Last year, the Globes awarded top honors to “1917” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” only to see them fail to capture the best picture at the Oscars, where they lost to “Parasite”.
Last winter, the HFPA faced controversy when it revealed that “Minari,” the story of a South Korean immigrant family who lived for themselves in rural America, would participate in the best foreign language film race. A24, the producer of the film, submitted the film to this category due to HFPA rules. The group stipulates that at least half of the dialogues of the candidates for the best drama or comedy / musical categories of the Golden Globes must be in English, a hurdle that “Minari” failed to overcome despite being produced by a American company, features many American Actors, and is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, an American filmmaker. “Minari” managed to get a better foreign language nomination, but he was excluded in all other categories.
The Globes will air on NBC on February 28.
