Regina King makes history as second African-American woman to receive Best Director at Golden Globes

  • Filmmaker Selma Ava DuVernay was the only other African-American woman to receive a nomination for Best Director in 2014
  • It’s especially impressive considering the fact that the critically acclaimed drama Amazon marked the Oscar-winning 50-year-old’s directorial debut.
  • One Night in Miami also won nods for Best Supporting Actor (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Best Original Song for Speak Now (Leslie Odom Jr. and Sam Ashworth).

Oscar winner Regina King managed to make history, once again, after the 78th Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday morning.

The 50-year-old triple threat is just the second African-American woman to receive a Best Director nomination at the Globes after filmmaker Selma Ava DuVernay in 2014.

It’s especially impressive considering that Amazon Studios’ critically acclaimed drama – based on the 2013 play by Kemp Powers – marked Regina’s directing debut.

King is competing for the honor against two other women – Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) – as well as Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and David Fincher (Mank).

Hamilton alumnus Leslie Odom Jr. – who played Sam Cooke – received the only nod among the One Night in Miami ensemble for Best Supporting Actor.

Tony’s winner, 39, faces stiff competition against Sacha Baron Cohen, Daniel Kaluuya, Jared Leto and Bill Murray.

Leslie and songwriter Sam Ashworth are also in the running for Best Original Song for Speak Now, which they will likely play on stage at the Beverly Hilton or virtually.
