Once again, Boygenius is coming back! The trio of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus released their self-titled six-song EP in 2018, and it absolutely reigned supreme. Since then, the three band members have come together to sing songs by Hayley Williams and Bridgers herself. And now the three of them are singing on “Favor”, the latest single from Baker’s highly anticipated upcoming album. Small oversights.
Small oversights is the first album that Julien Baker recorded with a full band, and we have already posted the first singles “Faith Healer” and “Hardline”. Like these other songs, “Favor” is sad, tender and cinematic. Unlike these other songs, “Favor” has Baker sing again in harmony with Bridgers and Dacus. They ring impressive together. On “Favor,” Baker sings, “I used to think of myself like I’m a talented liar / It turns out all my friends were trying to do me a favor.” Her friends are singing behind her. It settles.
In a press release, Dacus says:
We performed on “Favor” in Nashville the same day we recorded vocals for [Bridgers’] “Graceland Too” and one of my songs. That day had the same vibe as when we recorded the boygenius EP. Making music was just the natural result of being together, as simple as it gets, but also rare in a way that seems irreplaceable. I love the song for its austere but sensitive image of friendship, what it feels like to recover from broken trust. It makes me think of how the truth only ever shatters what should be broken and how love is never one of those things. I am always honored to be brought into Julien’s life and music.
Listen to “Favor” below.
Little oversights was released on 02/26 on Matador. Now I can’t wait to hear this Lucy Dacus song.
