The Washington football team held an introductory press conference for its new senior staff on Wednesday, and the quarterback position was one of the first topics of conversation.

Four different quarterbacks have started games in the 2020 season and 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins was released before the year was out. Alex Smith, Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen stay on site for VP Football and Player Staff Marty Hurney and General Manager Martin Mayhew.

Hurney and Mayhew both said they were impressed with how Smith played in his first six starts since undergoing numerous surgeries to repair the serious leg injury he suffered in 2018, but they have clearly indicated that nothing was settled yet.

“We have a lot of work to do,” said Hurney.

Hurney said the team did not want to mortgage their future to get a quarterback and head coach Ron Rivera joined Mayhew in saying the team didn’t necessarily have to find their long-term solution this offseason . Washington, however, was reportedly one of the teams chasing Matthew Stafford before the Lions agreed to trade him for the Rams, and other options should be available when the teams make moves during what is expected to be a busy offseason on the quarter market.
