DAVIE, Fla. – The College of Dentistry at Nova Southeastern University recently informed patients that it was possible that they were exposed to certain viruses due to an "inconsistency in the procedures of prescribed sterilization ".
According to a letter from NSU dated last Friday, the problem would have been discovered at the postdoctoral orthodontic clinic located at 3200 S. University Drive in Davie. None of the 11 other dental clinics in the university seem to have been affected.
The letter informed more than 1,100 patients that avoiding proper sterilization procedures created minimal risk of possible exposure to certain viruses.
"Instead of the requested heat sterilization process, the equipment was cleaned with a surface disinfectant," NSU spokesman Brandon L. Hensler said in a statement. "Once the college learned the isolated protocol infraction in this clinic, the NSU conducted a thorough review to make sure that this clinic followed the same protocols prescribed by the CDC as the other 11 clinics dental.
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this creates a minimal risk of possible exposure to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV for some of our orthodontic patients." CDC and an independent infection control expert retained by NSU said the risk was extremely low, but decisive action was taken to eliminate the variance and ensure that all protocols were strictly followed. "
The letter informed patients that they could be examined by a NSU doctor or by their own doctor, in which case NSU would bear the cost of the visit.
