First off, we’re not talking about The Associated Press who picked Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald for Defensive Player of the Year against Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker TJ Watt. The vote was very close and it could have gone either way. Both players have had elite seasons and should be applauded for it.
But as NFL reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala points out, it’s time to stop linking TJ to his big brother JJ Watt and leave his game and career to fend for itself. What Watt has done over the past two seasons was worthy of DPOY and the fact that he shares his DNA with the Texan defensive end has no bearing on that.
It really downplays his accomplishments when you can’t mention it without reminding everyone who his older brother is, like it has something to do with why he’s an elite player.
