Rockets star John Wall blows up NBA officials after narrow loss to Spurs

Despite being at home, the Rockets took 11 fewer free throw attempts than San Antonio in Saturday’s narrow loss. After Houston briefly took its only lead of the game with less than 4:00 to go in the fourth quarter, Spurs scored their next six points on the foul line to pull out.

In post-game comments, veteran guard John Wall – who led the Rockets with 27 points (52.6% FG) and 7 assists in 32 minutes – made it clear he was extremely frustrated with many calls.

Asked after the game about the late whistles for Saturday’s game against the Rockets, Wall replied:

I do not know why. I know I’m probably going to be fined for this, but the umpires, they’re just amazing. We’re a team with guys who go shopping a lot, and we always have excuses for why we don’t get the same calls as the other guys.

Guys are driving [and] every time we hit them or drag them down, they get all the calls. I feel like we got some guys that go pretty far between me, Vic [Oladipo], FOR EXAMPLE [Eric Gordon], who drive and don’t get those same calls. It’s a little frustrating, but because we’re missing some easy shots that we normally get, and some guys are getting calls they probably shouldn’t be.

The full video of Wall’s post-match interview can be viewed below. Despite spasms in his back, Wall absorbed significant contact as he moved to the rim on Saturday while trying to lead his Rockets (11-11) to victory. It was only Houston’s second loss in the last nine games.

The officials for Saturday’s game were David Guthrie, Mitchell Ervin and Suyash Mehta. It remains to be seen whether the NBA will fine Wall on Sunday for his comments, as they often do for public criticism of officials.
