Jason Blum’s GameStop Movie in Development at HBO

HBO is reportedly working on a film based on the recent GameStop WallStreetBets phenomenon by Jason Blum, Andrew Ross Sorkin and Len Amato.

Another film on the GameStop The WallStreetBets phenomenon is in development, this time at Jason Blum and Andrew Ross Sorkin’s HBO. The new project is the latest of several in development on the recent GameStop out-of-stock situation, including a Netflix adaptation of Mark Boal starring Noah Centineo.

GameStop’s stock market situation has been in the headlines since late January, as the bankrupt video game retailer saw a massive rise in stock values after Reddit group WallStreetBets intentionally inflated prices with widespread buying. The move was celebrated by many as a well-deserved popular attack on Wall Street hedge funds and short sellers (brokers who make money with failed firms), although others have condemned WallStreetBets for having upset the market in a dangerous way.

Regardless of the tangible financial repercussions, Hollywood has already seen the narrative potential of GameStop’s story. Several film projects are already underway, including a recently announced film for HBO. According to The Wrap, the project will be led by Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions and Andrew Ross Sorkin, the co-creator of the hit series Billion. Former HBO Films President Len Amato will serve as executive producer. The film will be scripted, supposedly in the style of other recent cultural / technological history films like The big court and Social network.

GameStop’s story is clearly ripe for a dramatic adaptation, but it’s still bizarre to see multiple studios, writers, and producers jump on the idea so soon after the phenomenon has started. The Netflix GameStop project has reportedly already cast its star in Noah Centineo. Another MGM film will be based on a book by Ben Mezrich, the author of the book that inspired Social network. Mezrich’s GameStop book hasn’t even been written yet, but MGM has reportedly gone for the rights already.

The speed at which studios are rushing to develop their own WallStreetBets projects is not unknown, but it is rather rare. The story itself and its economic and social impacts are still developing, and it may be some time before the full effect of the GameStop phenomenon – which has now spread to other struggling companies like AMC – reveals. Movie buffs and streaming subscribers will have their choice of ways to watch GameStop story pretty early on though, including the upcoming HBO adaptation.
