The Mets added depth in center field.
The team struck a deal with free agent Albert Almora on Sunday morning, Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed. Almora, 26, has spent the past five seasons with the Chicago Cubs.
The Mets missed star center fielder George Springer, who signed with the Blue Jays to a six-year, $ 150 million contract. They were also in talks with Red Sox free agent Jackie Bradley Jr.
A good glove who has had offensive difficulties over the past two seasons, Almora should serve as a right-handed alternative to Brandon Nimmo. In 28 games in the shortened 2020 season, Almora had a .167 / .265 / .200 cut-off line in just 34 appearances on the field. In 2019, Almora cut .236 / .271 / .381 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs in 363 home plate appearances.
