The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action last night (Saturday, February 6, 2021) with UFC Vegas 18 inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, which saw Alexander Volkov KO Alistair Overeem in the heavyweight headlining act (see). In the co-main event, Cory Sandhagen knocked out Frankie Edgar with a perfect flying knee to solidify as the next 135-pound title contender (highlights).
Biggest winner: Cory Sandhagen
“The Sandman” once again proved just how legitimate he was by sleeping off another longtime veteran and former champion, stunning Edgar with a devastating flying knee to knock him out in just 28 seconds. In his previous fight, Sandhagen did the same with Marlon Moraes via a wheel kick. Sandhagen now improves to 7-1 inside the Octagon with his only loss to Aljamain Sterling, who will fight bantamweight champion Petr Yan at UFC 259. Speaking of which, Sandhagen has ensured his fight championship against the winner after his electric knockout. This man is the real deal, ladies and gentlemen.
Finalist: Alexander Volkov
“Drago” ruined Alistair Overeem’s UFC championship dreams once and for all by dominating him before claiming a technical elimination (TKO) victory in the second round. Volkov has now claimed back-to-back wins – both by knockout – and will climb the 265-pound rankings and come closer to a title shot, which will be on the line at UFC 260 when heavyweight king Stipe Miocic, will face Francis. Ngannou. “Drago” amassed an impressive 7-2 record inside the Octagon, with two losses at the hands of Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes, both if the best in the division. All he has to do now is sit down and weigh in to see how the division unfolds in the coming months to see where he stands in the title picture.
The Biggest Loser: Michael johnson
While most of you expected Overeem to take this place (and rightly so) after being stopped by Volkov, “The Reem” will at least live to fight another day inside the house. ‘Octagon. Additionally, we’ll discuss his defeat and his fighting future in our “Monday Morning Hangover” article. As for Johnson, his fighting future is another story. “The Menace” was at one time seen as a legitimate threat to fight for a UFC title coming out of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), but things have gotten worse over the past two years, losing four in a row, with his last loss was last night against Clay Guida, who dominated Johnson for 15 minutes. When you look at Johnson’s record, he hasn’t done too well since 2015 because he’s only 3-9 in the past five years, which includes multiple three-game losing streaks. It’s unclear where he goes from here, but he’s on thin ice when it comes to his UFC career.
Biggest loser: Frankie Edgar
We’re going to step away from tradition here and put another big loser in the event, as we have to discuss Edgar’s stunning defeat at the hands of Sandhagen. “The Answer” was hoping for another lease on his fighting life by switching to bantamweight, but it has been anything but a picnic for him. Although he beat Pedro Munhoz in his debut at 135 pounds, many felt the fight should have gone the other way. On his second effort in his new weight class, Sandhagen sent him out in under 30 seconds, giving him his third loss in the last four outings. No one can guess it, but I don’t want to hear from him again fighting for a UFC title or even a title elimination fight, much like the buzz was going in that fight despite having a 1-2 before last night. . . His legacy is already defined as a former champion and one of the toughest fighters to ever walk the Octagon, but the past two years have been brutal for “The Answer”. That’s why if he ever wants to sniff another shot on the UFC strap, he’ll need to get at least three straight wins. And that’s a difficult task to say the least given his recent track record.
