Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) suggested on Sunday morning that former President Donald Trump intentionally instigated more violence during last month’s insurgency riot when he attacked then-Vice President Mike Pence on Twitter as thousands of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.
A day after the Wyoming Republican Party censored Cheney and called for his resignation for voting to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the January 6 riot, the third-ranked House Republican appeared on Fox News Sunday to declare that she will not resign.
“As I have explained and will continue to explain to supporters statewide and voters statewide, the oath I took to the Constitution required me to vote for impeachment and it does not bow to partisanship, it does not. Don’t bow to political pressure, ”Cheney told Fox News anchor Chris Wallace. “This is the most important oath we take and so I will stand by it and I will continue to fight for all the issues that matter so much to us across Wyoming.”
Her state party’s censorship follows last week’s attempt by House Republicans to remove her from her post as Speaker of the House Republican Conference. The Wyoming congresswoman survived when her colleagues voted 145-61 to keep her in the post.
Cheney also took a hit on both the GOP and Trump for peddling the “big lie” that the election was “stolen” by President Joe Biden and falsely claiming that pro-Trump rioters were not responsible for the murderous violence on Capitol Hill.
“The party people are wrong,” she said. “They believe BLM and antifa were behind what happened here on Capitol Hill. It just isn’t, it’s not true, and we’re going to have a lot of work to do.
“We lied to people,” she continued. “The extent to which President Trump, for months leading up to January 6, spread the idea that the election had been stolen or that the election had been rigged, was a lie. And people have to understand this. We need to make sure that we Republicans are the party of truth.
Cheney, the top House Republican to vote for Trump’s impeachment, said “the greatest threat to our public is a president who puts his own best interests above the Constitution,” adding that Trump is doing “everything what he could to steal ”The election and it ended with the attack on the Capitol.
Pressed by Wallace on whether she would vote to condemn Trump from impeachment if she was in the Senate, Cheney said she would “listen to the evidence” while referring to Trump’s Jan. 6 tweet attacking Pence.
“People will want to know exactly what the president was doing,” she said. “They want to know, for example, if the tweet he sent calling Vice President Pence a coward while the attack was in progress, if that tweet, for example, was a premeditated effort to provoke violence.”
“There are a lot of questions to be answered and there will be a lot, a lot of criminal investigations looking at all aspects of this and everyone who has been involved, as it should be, but I stand firm in my statement,” he said. Cheney concluded. “We have never seen this kind of aggression by a President of the United States against any other branch of government and it can never happen again.
The tweet in question, sent by Trump as the insurgency raged uncontrollably, read: “Mike Pence did not have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution, giving states a chance. to certify an answer key. set of facts, and not fraudulent or inaccurate facts that they were previously asked to certify. The USA demands the truth! “
