Nioh 2 receives not-so-flattering reviews on Steam due to poor performance and a lack of mouse and keyboard support.
Nioh 2, the prequel to Nioh, just released on PC via Steam after 10 months on PS4. And it’s going really well compared to the original game, with an all-time player count of 41,325 yesterday, more than three times that of Nioh’s original PC port.
But after a first round of stellar reviews, a few thumbs-down posts popped up in the comments section and dropped Nioh 2: Complete Edition to an overall “mixed” on Steam.
By far the most common complaint is poor performance, with many noting sluggish or low frame rates. “At first, I assumed that everyone who said frame loss was a big deal was overreacting,” wrote one reviewer, “but they were right. Executives fall very frequently. Wait to see if the developers fix it before buying.
One reviewer found there to be “massive drops of frames in key areas,” with the added problem of slowing the game down when crawling even getting around 30 frames per second. However, others report frame rates as low as 20 fps, even on relatively heavy hardware specifications.
“Worst PC port ever,” one Steam user succinctly said.
Many also report poor mouse and keyboard support, with imprecise inputs and settings that refuse to record. Worse yet, the tutorial / help screens only refer to the buttons on the controller and do not tell players about keyboard bindings, forcing the player to remember which keys are bound to which controller buttons.
On any other game, these issues might not have been that bad, but they’re the kiss of death for a Soulslike title. Timing is crucial for survival in Nioh 2, and anything that causes random slowdowns is sure to indicate players more than the already intense difficulty.
Koei Tecmo is sure to update the game in the coming weeks, but those interested in a new Soulslike experience might want to wait until Nioh 2 receives a few fixes first.
