Jay Cutler joined an ESPN 1000 live Twitch stream on Sunday, and he has some tips for Deshaun Watson. If Watson is serious about leaving Houston, but Texans general manager Nick Caserio is reluctant to trade him in, just follow Cutler’s lead from 2009.
“Do what I did, don’t show me,” Cutler said on ESPN 1000’s Twitch stream. “They’ll understand.”
While Cutler didn’t consider comparing Watson’s business demand to his own, he admitted they were similar. The only difference is that he thinks players have even more power now than they did when he was playing.
“I didn’t really follow it, or pay much attention to it,” Cutler said. “I think the players now have a lot of control where they want to go. I think their voice is heard much more. It’s just the day and age we’re in.
Cutler demanded a trade from the Broncos after head coach Mike Shanahan was fired, and then the promise that most of Shanahan’s offensive staff would stay was broken, according to reports at the time. In Watson’s case, reports say he felt betrayed after owner Cal McNair told Watson he would be involved in hiring their next GM, so the team would hire Caserio without consult it beforehand.
Caserio has argued that the Texans have no interest in trading Watson and will work to mend the broken relationship with their QB star. But according to Cutler, it might not matter.
“If he wants to get out, he’s going to get out one way or another.”
