Amanda Gorman is the first poet to perform for the Super Bowl.

During her short but already memorable career, 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman has achieved a series of stunning firsts. At 19, she became the country’s first young poet laureate. Last month, when she recited her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” at President Biden’s inauguration, she became the youngest inaugural poet in American history. And on Sunday, she became the first poet to perform for the Super Bowl.

Prior to the game, Gorman delivered an original poem titled “Chorus of the Captains” in a recorded segment. Gorman wrote the poem to celebrate three people who were chosen as honorary captains to enter the raffle: Trimaine Davis, a teacher from Los Angeles who helped his students obtain laptops for distance education; Suzie Dorner, a nurse in a Tampa who works with Covid-19 patients in an intensive care unit, and James Martin, a United States Marine Corps veteran from Pittsburgh who has worked to support veterans, athletes high school students and young people in their community.

In a performance before the draw, Gorman paid tribute to the honorary captains:

As leaders, healers and educators

Since stealing the show with a charismatic performance at the grand opening last month, Gorman has seen interest in her work soar. Its publisher has announced that it will print three million copies of its next titles, including its first collection of poetry and a picture book. Barack Obama, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Oprah Winfrey congratulated her on social media. IMG Models has signed Gorman and will represent her for fashion and beauty mentions.

Appearing at the Super Bowl is likely to bring an even wider audience to his work. The NFL reached out to Gorman in November, as the league tried to create a ceremony that would reflect the challenges facing the country. He decided to open the game by celebrating the people who have helped their communities get through the pandemic.
