BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –Armaan Franklin of Indiana hit a backing jumper over Joe Wieskamp of Iowa 1.8 seconds left Sunday to clinch a 67-65 victory at Assembly Hall.
It was a fourth loss in five games for the No.8 Hawkeyes, who continue to struggle to score victories. Franklin had only made one of his previous nine shots in the game, but had enough room to give the Hoosiers a streak sweep from Iowa.
Iowa could only muster a shot of desperation at midfield as the final horn sounded.
The Hawkeyes have been great at the start of each half, but each time the Hoosiers (10-8, 5-6 Big Ten Conference) have overcome deficits.
Iowa (13-6, 7-5) got 18 points each from Luka Garza and Joe Wieskamp, but only made 2 of 10 3 points in the second half. The Hawkeye bench players didn’t provide a punch either.
Keegan Murray scored 10 points before fouling, as he replaced injured guard CJ Fredrick in the starting lineup for the third time.
Here is what we learned:
Indiana returns to the game as Hawkeye starters sit down
The Hawkeyes were active from both ends of the field, taking a 17-4 lead seven minutes into the game. But three starters picked up two fouls apiece and sat down on the bench, in keeping with coach Fran McCaffery’s long-standing custom. The biggest omission from the roster was star center Luka Garza, who left with 12:30 to play and did not return. Connor McCaffery also became a spectator. Only rookie Keegan Murray returned for a brief stint from Jack Nunge, who was the only post player remaining. The message was clear that Fran McCaffery would accept a possible third foul on a rookie, but not on a veteran. For a while, Iowa was able to hold onto their lead, getting a few quality minutes from freshman Tony Perkins in particular. But eventually the inexperience caught up with the Hawkeyes, and the Hoosiers began to force turnovers, get transition baskets and break free for an open 3-point run. Indiana ended the half on a 12-2 run to take a 33-31 lead, fueled by 10 points on eight Iowa turnovers and nine offensive rebounds. It was a complete turnaround from the first few minutes.
Joe Wieskamp was riding early
Iowa junior winger Joe Wieskamp was Iowa’s lifeblood in the first half, and the main reason the game remained close. He played every 20 minutes, with 15 points and five rebounds. At one point it was Wieskamp and four freshmen on the floor the Hawkeyes, just trying to get to halftime with the lead. Wieskamp looked determined from the start, and buried 3 of 5 3 points in the opening half. The two who missed got in and out of the basket. He was on the right track when the Hawkeyes sorely needed his leadership, a reminder that he might be Iowa’s second-best player, but he’s still as capable as any Big Ten wing player. . His most important statistic in the first half was a foul. If he had had a second, it’s hard to understand what would have happened to Iowa’s chances.
The Hawkeyes seemed to be in control
The Hawkeyes also got off to a quick start in the second half, in part because they took better care of the basketball and controlled the boards. Iowa had no rolls in the opening 12 minutes of the second half, and Indiana didn’t have any second chance points in that time frame, either. Jordan Bohannon and Wieskamp were a big help on the defensive glass, collecting seven boards apiece in the first 33 minutes of play. Iowa also made a more determined effort to get the ball to work inside, going into the bonus. with 13:14 to play.
Iowa will then host Rutgers at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
