Consumer Reports just released its list of the top and least popular car brands, based on its owner satisfaction survey. They asked 369,000 owners if they would repurchase their same car if they had the option and extrapolated the data for the results. Tesla, Lincoln and Ram are at the top of the list, and Cadillac, Nissan and Infiniti round out the bottom.
What’s interesting here, automotive content specialist for Consumer Reports Mike Quincy told me that some brands with high owner satisfaction ratings, like Tesla and Lincoln, have many models that are below average in reliability. So even with their flaws, many car owners are still happy with their choices.
This year, Tesla got the highest mark in the poll, with owners rating their cars four or five out of five for ride, comfort and electronics in the cabin. No matter what you think of Tesla, you should know that Tesla owners are completely in love with their cars. Lincoln and Ram, the second and third brands in the survey, may not generate the same level of adoration, but owners are showing great satisfaction with their purchases. This, in turn, translates into repeat sales and positive word of mouth.
Quincy noted that it’s not the expensive brands that rack up the points. BMW is 13th, Lexus 19th and Mercedes-Benz 23rd.

Consumer Reports said Jeep is a good example; Jeep Wranglers tend to score low in annual reliability surveys. Ask any Wrangler owner what they think of their vehicle, and there is a star-eyed dedication to the Jeep experience.

Also interesting is Chrysler’s high rating, which I guess is driven by the popularity of the Pacifica minivan, which I can guarantee as a great ride. Likewise, I have driven quite a few Buicks and they score high on the Consumer Reports reliability chart, but the level of satisfaction is low.
