SpeedTest’s iOS app can now assess your internet’s video streaming quality, Ookla announced today. While the service typically checks general connection metrics such as maximum upload and download speeds and latency, the new test focuses specifically on video. It attempts to stream at a variety of resolutions and then measures load times and buffering.
Ookla explains that he added the new test due to the amount of time spent on the internet with streaming video. While its standard speed tests give a general idea of your overall network bandwidth, Ookla points out that Internet service providers “often prioritize video traffic differently from other traffic.” This means that the best way to compare video streaming performance ultimately is to simply stream video samples, as they “cannot be simulated over a network”.
The video streaming test is only available in the service’s iOS app at this time, although Ookla says it will arrive on other platforms soon. During the test, the app streams video in various resolutions, before listing details such as the maximum resolution of your internet connection and the video streaming load time. If you are still unable to stream video when your internet speed is fast enough to support it, Ookla says the app will connect to DownDetector to check if any service is having problems.
SpeedTest’s video streaming benchmark is available with the service’s latest iOS update, along with a slightly redesigned interface.
