Apple has finally offered the option to set Spotify as the default music player for Siri commands. This was previously only available on HomePods, and it was a feature we requested in 2019.
The new behavior appears in the beta version of iOS 14.5. The first time you ask Siri to read something, it will list all of the streaming services you have installed on your device and ask you which of them you want to use. Once you’ve done that, Siri defaults to using this service for the following requests …
The feature was first spotted by Reddit users (via MacRumors), and also includes podcast apps. Users without the Apple Music app installed report that this is simply the default music player they are using.

Users note, however, that this appears buggy at the moment.

Apple recently took a number of steps designed to keep antitrust action off. Last year, iOS 14 allowed users to change their default web browser and email app in five changes made in response to antitrust concerns. The changes were made after it was suggested the company was abusing its dominant position to disadvantage competing apps.
Apple has kept this one silent so far. It should be noted that there is no UI for this in Settings yet, so the company may not have plans to release this feature in iOS 14.5. Either way, it will make a lot of people happy once it’s fully available.
