Last week, Lil Uzi Vert went viral after taking to Instagram to reveal one of his multi-year plans: a $ 24 million pink diamond he implanted on his forehead. According to the rapper, he has spent the last few years paying for the expensive diamond in order to complete the feat of body modification. While extravagant jewelry is endemic to rap culture – who can forget Bart Simpson, the iconic glazed Gucci Mane? – Uzi seems to have taken things to a new level. He even tweeted as much. “If it’s accepted from the jump, it’s not ICONIC,” he said in response to a wave of criticism and pranksters online.
The stone is courtesy of New York jewelers Eliantte & Co, specializing in personalized pieces worn by celebrities. Simon Babaev, speaking on behalf of company owner Eliott Eliantte, spoke with RS at Explain how this piece went from Uzi’s imagination to the front of his noggin.
When did Uzi contact you about the diamond?
It all started in 2017. Once he saw the stone he really fell in love with it and said he would think what he wanted to do with it.
What was your first reaction to the idea of putting it on his forehead?
We didn’t think he was serious about it, but as he started to make payments on the stone in question, he made it clear that he was very serious.
Has anyone ever asked you to implant a diamond on their head?
At the front? No, it’s a bit extreme. But right on the face, we did it. In 2016, Young Thug had a diamond implanted in his face. It was pear shaped, like a teardrop, I believe. He had it on his face for a while, but then I think he lost it.
Is there a difference between doing something like this on your face and on the forehead?
It’s just a difference in application, really.
Is it sure?
Yeah, it’s as safe as any other piercing. As long as you take good care of it and have a good maintenance, everything is fine. We made sure that before doing anything Uzi brought someone in to consult on everything. We didn’t do it at random.
How do you make sure it doesn’t fall?
In the world of body modification, they usually do everything from stainless steel or surgical grade steel. But in our case, we did everything with precious metals. We have designed a specific support that clicks and locks in place. There is a whole mechanism involved, it is not a standard piercing. A specific part and part have both been designed with millimeter precision to have this applied to it.
You work with a lot of celebrities. Is this the most extravagant request you’ve seen?
Yeah, that was really extravagant. It would certainly be the highest level by far. People have made some crazy custom pieces, but something that’s done like a body modification, to have something on your forehead? It is certainly the first time.
Do you think this will inspire a trend?
People always want something that no one else has. And most importantly because we specialize in custom making, we will make a link for someone and it will become so popular that other people will ask for it, or they will try to personalize it to personalize it. Uzi himself is a trailblazer, so I wouldn’t be surprised if people would ask. It’s crazy. Uzi is definitely a trailblazer.
