CD Projekt Red was the victim of a targeted cyber attack, in which hackers claim to have stolen internal documents and source code from Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, etc. Twitter, noting that “its internal systems have been compromised” and that the hackers left a ransom note. The ransom note was made public alongside the announcement, and it claims that the hackers “dumped full copies of the source codes” for Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, Gwent and “the unreleased version of Witcher 3”, possibly the next- gen edition coming later this year.Hackers also claim to have access to “all” company documents related to “accounting, administration, legal, human resources, investor relations and more”. The ransom note ends by noting that CD Projekt Red has 48 hours to contact hackers, or “your source codes will be sold or disclosed online and your documents will be sent to our contacts in gaming journalism. Your public image will go drop even more and people will see how you [sic] shit your business functions. Investors will lose confidence in your company and the stock will plunge even lower, ”the note continued.

According to CD Projekt, devices on its network were encrypted, but they began to restore their IT infrastructure and data through backups. “We will not give in to the demands or negotiate with the actor, knowing that this could eventually lead to the disclosure of the compromised data,” the company’s Twitter statement said. CD Projekt Red states that to its knowledge, “the compromised systems did not contain any personal data of our players or users of our services”.

The company has contacted the relevant authorities, including the chairman of the personal data protection office and computer forensics specialists, who will investigate the cyber attack. This ransomware attack echoes a similar event for Capcom, in which hackers stole huge amounts of data, ultimately causing several games to leak and leaving former employees to fear for the safety of their personal data. Recently, Capcom said the attack did not have a significant impact on the games it was planning to release.

In other news from CD Projekt Red, the company recently released a patch for Cyberpunk 2077 that addressed a vulnerability that could make PC modders vulnerable to malicious hackers. Tesla recently revealed that its new cars can run The Witcher 3 via in-game 10 Teraflop platforms.
