Zack Snyder’s Justice League Reveals Jared Leto Joker Look

Huh.

We’ve known for a while that Zack Snyder is resurrected Smörgåsbord a Justice League cut somehow find the time its gargantuan runtime to add a bit of Jared Leto’s Joker for good measure, but now we have our first look at him in … well, not so much action, because he’s just sitting there looking miserable, which seems to be the extent of what we’ve seen about Snyder Justice League so far.

But! he is enough different from the Joker, we saw Leto star in David Ayer Suicide Squad.

Revealed on social media today, the Joker was not originally in Snyder’s plans to Justice League before the director tragically left the film following a death in the family. When Warner Bros. gets the chance to do a new version of Justice League, however – and realizing that whatever the original plans he would have had it for future DC movies beyond Justice League are not the direction of the DC movie come in now—Snyder saw the opportunity to indulge and incorporate some of his own ideas for the Dark Knight and Clown Prince of Crime into the new cut.

Joker appears in a scene that we finally saw a version of in Joss Whedon’s film version: a nightmarish vision of an upcoming disaster experienced by Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne from an Earth devastated by Darkseid.

“What’s cool about the scene is that Joker is talking directly to Batman about Batman,” Snyder said. Vanity Fair. “It’s Joker who analyzes Batman on who he is and what he is. This is what I also felt the fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It didn’t seem cool to me that we were going to come all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.

This is essentially why this ‘new’ Joker is so different from the infamously tattooed, short-haired Joker we met. Suicide Squad, and more like … a strange amalgam between Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, Jared Leto and The Crow? Snyder didn’t explain why the Joker is missing his literal job but added that aside from the medical gown he wears, the Joker costume includes a bulletproof vest filled with the badges of cops he killed, so do whatever you want with it.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League releases on HBO Max on March 18.
