The Weeknd has just come off a dizzying, somber halftime performance at Super Bowl LV in Tampa, and the reception of his show seemed rather polarizing. Some loved it, some couldn’t help but complain on Twitter. Where did you fall Don’t answer that … nobody cares. This is yesterday’s news.
Instead, we look to the future and turn our attention to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles next year. Who could be in line for half-time honors in 2022? It’s too early to know, but it’s not too early to guess. Here are 10 suggestions that make sense, in a way:
Duck
It seems like an obvious starting point. The singer / rapper made a cameo appearance during Super Bowl LV in a commercial like “Drake from State Farm,” but it seems only natural that he gets the halftime show soon. Drake is so entrenched in the sports community at this point that it’s honestly shocking that he hasn’t already landed the gig. He’s got the success and all-star power to qualify, so why not make him two back-to-back Canadian headliners?
Foo fighters
Another case of “how haven’t they done this already?” Are the Foo Fighters past their prime? Probably, but they have the necessary catalog (and more) and are still capable of putting on a show hell. Plus, you wouldn’t have to deal with all the cranky old sportswriters complaining that they don’t “get” the music.
Rihanna
It’s been a while since Rihanna has been in the music spotlight, but she’s apparently sitting on her completed ninth studio album. If she chooses to release it this year, it could set up a comeback tour that puts her on stage at Super Bowl LVI. She previously turned down the halftime gig and was very critical of the NFL – especially regarding Colin Kaepernick’s treatment – but that was before Jay-Z’s Roc Nation (the label Rihanna signed) does not enter into a partnership. with the NFL to produce the Super Bowl halftime shows.
Taylor Swift
Does she need the concert? Certainly not, and Swift has apparently intended to do things her own way while limiting her time in the spotlight for the past several years. That being said, she is arguably the biggest star in music and the Super Bowl offers one of the biggest stages in music. With a bunch of new music she hasn’t performed live yet, who can say the temptation wouldn’t be there?
Snoop dogg
Much like Drake, Snoop has been integrated into the sports community for a long time, and he’s successful enough to put on a big show (and enough famous friends to have a bunch of cool guest performers.) It doesn’t hurt that it seems like he likes to say “yes” to every offer that comes his way and that next year’s Super Bowl is in Los Angeles.
Harry Styles
He is one of the biggest young stars in music and his selection is said to be hugely popular among a younger demographic which could be really appealing to the league. Additionally, his more recent solo work has been well received by critics and fans alike, so there is enough catalog to make him work. Plus, it would open the door for a possible One Direction reunion at the Super Bowl and it would certainly generate some buzz.
Britney spears
So much has been said about Britney recently thanks to the drama surrounding her tutelage and the #FreeBritney movement. There’s a lot of uncertainty about her status right now, but if she’s good enough to perform (and really wants to), the Super Bowl could provide her with the opportunity to spark a comeback and start a new chapter. for itself, especially if the guardianship is then lifted (or modified).
Bruce springsteen
I know he’s done the halftime show before, but I still put him here for other sports writers to retweet this post.
New radicals
Yes, they only have one album and have been inactive for over 20 years, but they recently got together for a special performance ahead of President Biden’s inauguration, so why not double down? And who cares about a limited catalog … a Super Bowl halftime show is typically 12-14 minutes long, which means they can just play “You Get What You Give” about two and a half times. . It’s almost a perfect setlist.
Creed
You saw Creed’s performance for Thanksgiving in 2001, right? It’s borderline criminal, they didn’t have a halftime show after that. It is not too late. Do the right thing.
