And Castor notably “did what Trump himself did not do: admitted that Joe Biden won the presidential election”, The Associated Press Remarks. He called Trump a “former president,” said he “was impeached by voters” and argued Americans are “smart enough to pick a new administration if they don’t like the old one, and they just did it “.
Trump continues to falsely insist that he did win the election, and this “big lie” – that the election was “stolen” from him – underpins his entire impeachment trial. Castor was using Trump’s status as a former president to make his argument, rejected by the Senate, that it is unconstitutional to try a president after he leaves. In fact, “Trump first pushed his impeachment lawyers to make a baseless claim that the election was stolen,” Publish reports, “an approach they ultimately rejected while still arguing that the First Amendment protects their client’s right to share false information and misrepresentation.”
