Lena Dunham supports the removal of the dissection scene where real cat corpses were used in the next generation of the HBO Max series
HBO’s upcoming drama series Max Genera + ion should give a realistic look at high school life in the modern world.
But it seems the show’s realistic premise has gone too far in one case, even for its top executive producer Lena Dunham.
The Girls creator and star has stepped out and exposed a scene set in a biology class, where actors dissect real dead cats.

The controversy apparently became public when a tweet from @Lilith_Rosex was shared on Friday claiming that the production team had “brought real dead kittens as a background to ‘dissect’ on set. No warning, people have had trauma reactions.
That same person shared a second tweet about how a cameraman on the show tested positive for COVID-19, but the production team did not release the information before the scene with the dead cats.
Dunham only learned of the accusations in the tweets the next day as she was not on set. She is currently in London, England, filming her new film, Catherine, Called Birdy, which she has written and directed.

“I am committed in my life and my work to the treatment of animals, based on principle, human and ethics. I never use dead animals in any of my work, and I wasn’t on set or knew they were used in a recently shot scene depicting a task in biology class. ” Dunham said in a statement to Variety.
She ended by adding, “ I fully support the scene being edited out of the series. ”
His statement came right after HBO Max confirmed that two of the extras had left the set due to their discomfort and that the scene would be edited out of the show.
“Genera + ion portrays the unfiltered experiences of high school students and is drawn from many of the formative moments in the lives of the show’s writers. The production recently filmed scenes depicting biology classwork involving the dissection of animal specimens. These were ethically obtained in consultation with American Humane through an organic sourcing company that works with schools, ”a spokesperson for HBO Max said in a statement to Variety.

He also noted that “ everyone [in the scene] involved was informed in advance that this would be a sensitive scene involving actual dissection; the assistant directors checked in regularly with all the participants on the set, and two background actors who expressed their discomfort were released with their full pay.
Sources confirmed that a crew member tested positive for COVID-19 and has since isolated himself, but the production team learned of the test results after the day’s end, which contradicts the second tweet.
The series has been temporarily halted as a precaution and will resume in accordance with safety guidelines once deemed safe.
Genera + ion was created by 19-year-old Zelda Barnz and her father Daniel Barnz. It stars mostly unknown actors, as well as veteran Martha Plimpton and Judge Smith.
Genera + ion is slated for release on HBO Max in Spring 2021.
