CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Tina Turner and Iron Maiden topped the historic list of nominees for this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone was the first to reveal the course on Wednesday morning.
The 2021 class will be inducted at a ceremony to be held in Cleveland on a date and location to be determined this fall. Joining the aforementioned numbers are Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush, Devo, The Go-Go’s, Chaka Khan, Carole King, Fela Kuti, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren and Dionne Warwick.
This is the most feminine ballot that Rock Hall has ever produced, with seven of the 16 acts being led by women. These appointments for 2021 are also the most racially diverse in 15 years.
“This remarkable ballot reflects the diversity and depth of artists and music celebrated by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” John Sykes, president of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement. “These nominees left an indelible impact on the soundscape of the world and influenced countless artists who followed them.
Artists are eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first official recording. The 2021 poll includes two new eligible acts in Jay-Z and Foo Fighters. Other artists nominated for the first time (albeit having to wait much longer) include Blige, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Warwick and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is looking to secure his second Rock Hall induction, having already joined Nirvana in 2014. The same goes for Carole King, who was inducted as a non-performer / songwriter. in 1990, and Turner, who was inducted as part of Ike & Tina Turner in 1991. King and Turner could join Stevie Nicks (2019) as the only women to be inducted into Rock Hall twice.
LL Cool J leads the way in terms of recurring nominees. The rap legend is in his sixth appointment. Chaka Khan is on his third solo nomination (fifth if you count his nominations with the funk band Rufus). This year’s poll also comes with Northeast Ohio ties. Devo is from Akron while Grohl is from Warren.
Six-time nominations since 2003, Kraftwerk and Dave Matthews Band and Pat Benatar, who finished in the top two in Fan Vote 2020, notably missed out on nominations this year. Speaking of which, fans can have their say through the annual online poll through April 30 by visiting rockhall.com. The top five artists in the fan vote will feature a “fan ballot” counted along with over 1,000 other ballots from musicians, historians and members of the music industry.
The 2021 Rock Hall class will be announced in May. Ticket information for the Fall Ceremony will be announced at a later date.
