Audi E-Tron and Porsche Taycan only help Tesla

The Audi E-Tron GT is finally here, and he will launch a friendly rivalry with his distant teammate, the Porsche Taycan. But I can’t help but think that the real winner in all of this is not the Volkswagen Group. His You’re here.

And it’s less about the Model S suddenly becoming a less formidable competitor – even against automakers whose job it is to build blazingly fast cars – and more about the relative affordability of Tesla. Model 3.

Because the model is the electric vehicle that most American drivers can buy.

We are full load on EVs, but so far the wave-making EVs have been halo EVs like the Taycan, E-Tron and until recently the Model S. These three cars start at around 80 $ 000 and can easily be divided into six digits.

Meanwhile, the entry-level Model 3 starts at around $ 38,000, lower than the average transaction price for a new car in 2020, according to KBB. It’s still a little money, but not so much that it puts the BEV out of the running for many buyers. It doesn’t matter that there are similarly priced EVs like the Bolt, Leaf, or Mach-E. These don’t have the kind of followers or mass market exposure that Teslas does, for better or for worse.

Tesla’s ubiquity is not always good; the automaker and its eccentric leader can be the butt of the joke at times, but kidding or not, drivers know Tesla. His model 3 did not quite hold promise affordable EV, but Tesla is able to develop this car so that its quality can catch up with its price.

Tesla might even be able to deliver a really affordable EV which might start at $ 25,000. Few other companies can say that. It’s possible that the big automakers could take the fight to Tesla using federal tax credits – let’s see how things work out on that front in the near future.

But for now, Tesla holds an enviable position as a maker of electric cars. Meanwhile, Porsche and Audi congratulate themselves on being the makers of what may as well be electric. Great cars.
