Security video, which House impeachment officials first released on Wednesday, shows Goodman running as crowds begin to enter the Capitol. Goodman passes Romney and redirects him from the rioters path before continuing to the first floor to respond to the breach and distract the crowd of lawmakers.
Romney of Utah is frequently the target of criticism from Trump supporters. He was the only Republican to vote to convict Trump in his first impeachment trial last year and has frequently criticized him throughout his political career, before and after his presidency.
Democrat Del. Stacey Plaskett of the Virgin Islands, one of the nine responsible for the arraignment, presented the security footage to senators, showing where the rioters had entered the Capitol and how close they were to the then vice president Mike Pence, whom they were targeting.
“They came at the urging of Donald Trump to prevent Congress, a separate branch of government, from certifying the results of a presidential election,” Plaskett said.
Goodman, now the Senate Acting Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms, had previously been hailed as a hero after the previous video emerged of him guiding the violent crowd away from the Senate Chamber, where Pence had conducted the ceremonial count of the electoral votes from 2020.
Images of the insurgency captured by Huffington Post reporter Igor Bobic show Goodman being chased down a Capitol staircase by a mob of insurgents shortly after their break-in. When he reached a landing, he looked to his left, where he noticed the door to the Senate chamber still unguarded. He then led the rioters to the right, away from the lawmakers and towards the deputy officers.
Some lawmakers have introduced legislation to recognize Goodman with a Congressional Gold Medal for potentially saving lives. The medal is reserved for Americans who have made “remarkable achievements and contributions” to their country.
