New security footage of the assault on Capitol Hill presented by House impeachment officials on Wednesday showed the officer Eugene Goodman ordering Senator Mitt Romney to safety on January 6. Romney appeared to be heading in the direction of the rioters when Goodman pulled him away.

The footage was released on Wednesday during former President Trump’s impeachment trial. House impeachment officials featured the new footage in their opening arguments against Mr. Trump, who was indicted by the House for inciting insurgency rioting on Capitol Hill on January 6 .

The footage showed how close the Utah Republican was to the conflict with the angry crowd, something that probably could have happened if Goodman hadn’t intervened. Goodman tried to hold back the crowd and distract them from the Senate Chamber.

“Officer Goodman walks past Sen. Mitt Romney and orders him to turn around to get to safety,” said Stacey Plaskett, House impeachment official, describing the silent security footage as she took them to safety. was playing.

Goodman led many rioters to leave the Senate chamber, saving lawmakers critical time to safety. Goodman also allowed Vice President Mike Pence and his family to escape to a safe place, just moments before the rioters could see the Vice President.

It was just one of the never-seen footage that House impeachment officials showed on Wednesday.

Only one camera angle is allowed during the Senate trial, meaning viewers do not have the opportunity to see senators’ reactions. But the reporter from the pool inside the bedroom said at the time that Romney was watching the footage intently because it showed Goodman could potentially save his life. Most of the senators were glued to the footage as well, pool reporters said.

During the dinner break, Romney told reporters it was “disturbing” to see the footage. He also said he didn’t know he was so close to the crowds and didn’t know it was Goodman who had put him to safety.

“I can’t wait to thank him the next time I see him,” Romney said. “That I was indeed lucky that Officer Goodman was there to point me in the right direction.

House impeachment director Eric Swalwell reminded senators they were only “58 paces” from where the crowds gathered when they were evacuated from the chamber at 2:30 pm The crowd reached the Senate gallery at 2:45 pm.
