PSA: Slack for Android may have revealed your password

Unfortunately, although this password issue was caused by Slack’s Android app, there is no way to change your password from within the app. Instead, you’ll need to use the desktop or the web app to update your Slack password.

1. Open Slack on the desktop or on the web

   First, you need to open Slack on your desktop or laptop, through a native Windows / macOS / Linux app, or through the Universal web app.

   It is at least possible to sign in to the Slack web app from Chrome for Android, using the “Desktop Site” toggle, but the experience will be awkward and unfriendly.

2. Go to account settings

   Next, click on your profile picture in the top right corner of the app, then click “View profile»From the drop-down menu. In the panel that opens, you should see a button with three dots, labeled “More”. Click on it, then click “Account settings. “

3. Change or reset your password

   You should now see a title titled “Password. »Click the”develop”Just to the right of it.

   Here you can either directly change your login details by entering your old and new password, or send yourself a password reset email if you have lost your password.

4. Repeat for each workspace

   Notably, since each Slack workspace uses its own login details, you’ll want to repeat this password change process for each workspace you’re a part of.

5. Change overlapping passwords

   Also, since it’s possible that your Slack passwords have been discovered, if you are using one of them on another website or app, it might be a good idea to change those passwords as well.

6. Find Slack in the Settings app

   Since your password has been stored in the Slack app logs, you will need to manually clear these logs from your phone. First, you’ll want to find Slack in the Settings app on your phone. If your Settings app offers a search, you can just search for “Slack.” Otherwise, you’ll need to find Slack in your list of installed apps.

7. Erase data

   Next, you need to tap on “Storage” or “Storage & Cache” to manage data from the Slack app. Tap “Clear Storage” to clear your phone of all Slack for Android-related data, including logs containing a password.

   Note that this will log you out of each Slack workspace. You will need to log back in to make sure your notifications are still received correctly.
